I hesitated a bit to purchase a Play, I already had a Syno 112j which still worked perfectly but did not allow me to stream via 3G, because no video transcoding, and I do not have the internet connection that allow me to send large files. The acquisition of a Play, therefore, was the solution to my concerns, and actually for all files with its non-DTS it works wonderfully, it is necessary to leave him a minute or 2 for the conversion depending on the size of the video file, but after that, it is that of happiness, fluidity and video quality well suited to the size of the screen on which we view the film (very little artifacts), tested on Ipad 2 and Iphone 5S. The only downside was the incompatibility declared by the Syno files with DTS sound, but after a few hours of research on the internet the solution is quickly found by installing a package manually on the 214Play, namely the FFmpegWithDTS. I'm on DSM 5. 2-5592 and it works perfectly, and now all my files are perfectly read on a tablet or smartphone, DTS, AC3, or others. Already owner of a Synology NAS which a DS211+, I dedicated this one to the video monitor through the native application "Surveillance Station". Interface DSM 5. 0 at the top and very user-friendly. Full setup in a few minutes. Short but very good! I purchased this product to manage my videos, and be able to view them on any Tv, via bodies as diverse as the appleTV, tvix, or emtec, as well as on the computers and tablets of apple. Easy to implement (for my needs), quiet. However, I have a few concerns in the integration of music and photos with the Mac OS environment, but this was not my first objective. All three of these disks is saved on a first NAS (Drobo 800FS with 8 hard drives of 3 and 4 Tb with dual redundancy), which was itself backed up to a second NAS (Drobo FS with 5 hdd 4tb dual redundancy), the most important files are themselves backed up a third time on a third NAS (Drobo 2nd generation with 4 hdd 2tb and connection via droboshare). These three NAS are in three geographic areas are very different, one in the basement, the other in the attic, and the third in another building on the other side of the street.... I have not had the time, nor the desire, nor the need, to test even superficially the applications intended by the manufacturer or his fans : to me, a machine of this kind is a storage place, simply, who must ensure a perfect security and a total availability, fast, and permanent files. So if it is necessary to add applications, it gets more complicated life. Either it works as it should do so as soon as one opens the box, either it is a bad product. And so this server is a great product. The setup phase, inevitable here, is simple and quick, can be done (it is probably most convenient) directly using the LCD even if I find more cool to do it at the keyboard to the mouse and a large screen... The security SEEMS to be well covered by the system chosen by the manufacturer, the Raid5. You may have other preferences, and apparently all of the Raid systems are configurable, but the most appropriate, and easiest for this use, it is without doubt the Raid5. Now, the point of view of efficiency, no problem, the files are quickly written and read, completely available, backups are programmed very easily (I use for my part a software of sync and not backup, in the instance GoodSync in its last version which has the huge advantage of allowing the files to be fully available, without having to restore to make as you just need to reload and resynchronize the files). The only flaw, for me, and it is very relative, it is the use of the Raid5. Perfect because it allows you to change the hard drives to be hot, to be able to spend in addition to the failure of one or two hard drives, no matter which, without the slightest slowdown, and when we received the disk to replace the faulty, hop, removed and replaced, without nothing to stop. Incidentally, the discs supplied (optional) with this machine, the WD Red, are excellent drives, but they are not the only ones on the market, far from it. I have a preference for the Barracudas (YMMV), cheaper, and faster. And think carefully and compare before you buy this excellent system (I prefer the Drobo.... but this system is very good too) : especially don't buy it full, the offerings consisting of 4 disks WD Red 4 and 6tb, are, at the present time, a LOT more expensive than if you buy the system empty and the drives separate, including the same disks. And if you buy the disks separately (you'd be foolish to buy them already installed), you will be able to take different brands and at least different models. And only the pair with no, on the contrary, dépareillez : the system will manage it very well (if the disk sizes are identical, otherwise salt the drobo knows how to manage), and you'll be better protected against a defective batch.
